It is a useful book on the basics of caring for afro hair as widely agreed upon within the natural hair community frequent deep conditioning with heat and protein-based conditioning as needed, moisturising hair everyday, keeping use of heat to a minimum, good nutrition etc.

The author debu This is the first book on black hair-care I read back in The author debunks a number of hair-care myths. However, it is ultimately for the reader to find out works for their hair. For example, I do not follow the author in never trimming my ends and not using hair brushes.

Cathy Howse heavily persuades the reader to buy her own products, which she developed having been dissatisfied at the products available at the time. I think it is very unlikely that the reader would have been convinced by the author's claim back then. Even more so now, given the great improvement in the quality, range and availability of afro hair products, especially since the natural hair movement.

Personally, I have not tried the products and have seen good results in the health and growth of my hair by just being consistent in the hair care practices mentioned. I wouldn't recommend this book because so much information is now widely known and shared. It would be surprising if the prospective reader does not already know the information summarised above. The prospective reader might even be disappointed because the book misses more current methods of hair-care and styling.

Mar 10, Evelyn Lastname rated it it was ok. The book is relevant to the time it was made but not now. For those of you still interested in learning more about black hair, I recommend The science of bl very opinionated and seemed to have lots of beef with hairstylists lol, there were certain things she said that weren't accurate, but to be honest, it was most likely not her fault keeping in mind that this book was written and released over 20 years ago, a lot of the information I know now about black hair or hair, in general, wasn't known.

For those of you still interested in learning more about black hair, I recommend The science of black hair written by Audrey Davis- Sivasothy Great Book The information in the book was clear and straight to the point. I enjoyed reading it and I hope others do too. Nov 17, Maliza Mukungu rated it it was ok. I can tell the author has received a lot of backlash from what she says in the beginning of the book and so a lot of time is spent defending and bring up some of the negative comments she received.

Personally I prefer it if people concentrate on what they are good at and not what others have said about them because those people will never stop. Hence I didn't enjoy that a lot time was spent responding to the nay-sayers right at the very beginning. However, the book is to the point and the author I can tell the author has received a lot of backlash from what she says in the beginning of the book and so a lot of time is spent defending and bring up some of the negative comments she received.

However, the book is to the point and the author does deliver with her common-sense approach which really makes you question the myths out there about afro-textured hair and also she gives summarized version of what afro-textured hair needs.

I like the summaries and key points at the end of each chapter. I liked the information on moisturizers, conditioners and shampoos. She kept mentioning and reiterating what her research had shown, but there was no back up, in fact it felt at times like those statements came out of nowhere and were not substantiated. First Sentence "Why are Whites, Hispanics, Indians, and Asians seemingly so fortunate to be able to grow long hair, whereas most Blacks have such a difficult time achieving the same?
