For me, the granddaddy of all of these games, the dead game that is foremost in my mind, is DreamBlade. The funny thing is, this game had everything going for it.
A big company. A solid lineage. Loads of funding and advertising. DreamBlade, from Wizards of the Coast, premiered at GenCon in August of ; its arrival caused enough stir to generate an article by the Associated Press that was reprinted in a number of other media outlets, including the Washington Post. For you Magic players, think Planeswalkers summoning creatures to the battlefield.
The game itself was even more intriguing. Claiming territory and destroying creatures earned you victory points, and the first person to win six turns won the game. The gimmick was that, unlike every other miniatures game out there, where the stats of each figure were on separate cards, DreamBlade minis had their stats on the fairly large, square base of the mini itself. Each miniature belonged to a certain Aspect, which corresponded roughly to the colors of mana in Magic: Valor was blue and signified by an icon of crossed swords; Fear was green, signified by a skull; Passion was red and signified by a fireball; Madness was gray and signified by a tentacle.
Each particular Aspect had particular strengths and focuses, and the Aspect of the creatures you cast helped you pay the casting cost for other creatures of the same Aspect.
